Samsung Chef Collection
Designing a connected kitchen-tablet experience for owners of Samsung’s premium Chef Collection appliances.
Samsung’s Innovation Lab in Seattle was exploring how its Chef Collection could extend beyond luxury appliances into a more useful, differentiated in-kitchen experience. Chef Collection owners received a dedicated Samsung tablet as part of the premium product line, creating an opportunity to pair high-end hardware with a curated cooking companion.
The concept was designed for serious home cooks: people who wanted more than a recipe browser while they were busy in the kitchen. It needed to help them decide what to make, find recipes that matched their preferences and available time, follow each step with confidence, understand nutritional information, and handle missing ingredients. It also connected to the Chef Collection appliance ecosystem rather than functioning only as a standalone recipe app.

I was the lead and only product designer on the concept. I worked with the Innovation Lab team on strategy and product direction, then owned the content structure, interaction model, wireframes, visual system, interface design, and prototypes.
The work began from zero. There was no existing connected cooking experience to refine, so I helped define how the tablet could support the full journey from meal intent to recipe selection, guided preparation, appliance connection, nutrition, and ingredient fulfillment.
The Real Problem
Premium appliances alone did not create a premium cooking experience. The connected-kitchen opportunity had to be useful while someone was actively preparing food—when hands were busy, attention was divided, and a phone-sized recipe experience was not enough.
The experience also needed to turn a large recipe catalog into a practical decision. Users needed a way to start with intent, such as cuisine, ingredients, and available cooking time, then move into a small set of relevant recipes instead of browsing endlessly. Once a recipe was selected, the system needed to make ingredients, instructions, appliance connection, nutrition, and missing-item fulfillment feel like one coherent experience.
What Changed / Outcome
I designed a connected tablet experience that began with meal preference and moved through curated recipe recommendations into detailed recipe preparation. A user could choose preferences such as cuisine, ingredients, and cooking time; compare a small set of recipes; open a recipe detail; work through guided prep steps; review nutrition; and send or order missing ingredients.
The tablet was designed to function like a calm cooking partner rather than a content site. Large touch targets, persistent ingredient context, step-by-step guidance, visual hierarchy, and appliance-aware concepts helped make the experience usable in a real kitchen. The work was presented to Samsung leadership as an internal concept.
